DERA ISMAIL KHAN – Unidentified militants blew up the Government Girls High School Akbari in Tank district on Friday, marking yet another targeted attack on public institutions in the troubled region. Police said the attackers planted an improvised explosive device (IED) inside the building, which went off with a loud explosion and reduced the school to rubble.

According to officials, the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Ghulam Imam police station. The school premises were vacant at the time of the blast, which prevented any casualties. Police reached the site soon after the explosion and cordoned off the area to collect evidence and begin an investigation.

Tank DPO Shabbir Hussain Shah confirmed that unidentified armed men had planted the device inside the school. He said the attack completely destroyed the building and added that efforts were under way to trace those responsible. He assured that security measures were being reviewed to prevent further incidents.

Local residents said this was not an isolated case. They reported that armed groups have repeatedly targeted basic health units (BHUs) and educational institutions on the outskirts of Tank. Several facilities have been set ablaze, while many others have been blown up in a similar fashion.

Local elders also expressed mounting concerns over the rapidly deteriorating law and order situation in the district. They said nearly a dozen health centres and schools have been destroyed in recent bombings, leaving thousands without basic services. They also noted that around two dozen police personnel and government officials have been killed by armed groups in the region over the past year.

The attack has heightened fears among residents, who say the growing frequency of such incidents reflects weakening security conditions. Police, meanwhile, have launched a formal investigation into the blast and assured the public that operations will continue against militant elements active in the area.
