Pakistan raises alarm over Islamophobia after Babri Mosque flag hoisting

Pakistan voices concern over ‘Ram Temple’ flag hoisting at Babri Mosque

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has urged the international community to take notice of rising Islamophobia, hate speech, and attacks against religious minorities in India following the hoisting of a flag at the so-called “Ram Temple” at the Babri Mosque site. The call was made in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.

Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi appealed to the United Nations and relevant international organizations to play a proactive role in safeguarding Islamic heritage and protecting the religious and cultural rights of all minorities in India.

He emphasized the responsibility of the Indian government to ensure the security of all communities, including Muslims, and to protect places of worship in line with international human rights obligations.

The statement highlighted Pakistan’s deep concern over the flag hoisting at the newly constructed Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which stands on the site of the historic Babri Mosque. The centuries-old mosque was demolished on December 6, 1992, by extremist mobs, and subsequent judicial decisions permitting the temple’s construction have been criticized as reflecting discriminatory policies against minorities.

Pakistan said the incident illustrates a wider pattern of marginalization of religious minorities in India, particularly Muslims, under the influence of majoritarian Hindutva ideology. Numerous historic mosques in India are reportedly under threat of desecration or demolition, while Muslims face growing social, economic, and political exclusion.

The Foreign Office called on India to uphold its constitutional and international obligations to protect minority communities and their cultural heritage, stressing that the international community should remain vigilant to prevent further violations and ensure justice and equality for all religious groups.
