ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) scored a clean sweep in Sunday’s by-elections, winning all six National Assembly seats and six of seven Punjab Assembly seats up for grabs. The elections were marked by an opposition boycott, low voter turnout, and allegations of rigging.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the party candidates for their “brilliant success,” attributing the wins to the leadership of party supremo Nawaz Sharif and the hard work of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He said the results reflect public confidence in the PML-N’s performance, commitment to development, and public welfare.

If PMLN wins 5 NA seats in today’s bye-elections, it will not need PPP votes for a simple majority in NA in future or in other words PMLN can
stay in power without PPP support!

In NA-18 Haripur, PML-N’s Babar Nawaz Khan secured 163,996 votes, defeating PTI-backed independent candidate Shehrnaz Omar Ayub, wife of former NA opposition leader Omar Ayub, who received 120,220 votes. PTI leaders, including Asad Qaiser and Omar Ayub, rejected the results, alleging manipulation of Form-45s and declaring the polls “fraudulent.” PTI claimed voter turnout was extremely low, with over 80 percent of citizens reportedly abstaining in line with their boycott call.

The PML-N also won NA-104 (Faisalabad-X), NA-129 (Lahore-XIII), NA-143 (Sahiwal-III), NA-185 (Dera Ghazi Khan-II), and multiple provincial seats including PP-73, PP-87, PP-115, PP-116, and PP-203. The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) won one provincial seat in Muzaffargarh after the PML-N did not field a candidate, with PTI absent from most contests.

Political analysts noted that these victories could strengthen PML-N’s position in the National Assembly, potentially allowing the party to maintain a simple majority without relying on PPP support. Observers also highlighted that the by-polls reflected the influence of patronage networks in constituencies like Haripur, where female representation has historically been absent.

While PML-N celebrated its triumph, the PTI vowed to challenge the results in court and organize peaceful protests, raising questions about the transparency and credibility of the electoral process in the boycotted by-elections.
