US envoy urges Pakistan to guard economic sovereignty

Published on: November 17, 2025 4:34 PM

US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker has urged Pakistan to protect its economic sovereignty and avoid falling into debt traps as it moves forward with global partnerships. Speaking to reporters at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Sunday, she stressed the need for responsible financial decision-making. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of prioritising long-term national interests.

Baker stated that Pakistan remained free to build relations with any country, including China, but must assess projects carefully to prevent unsustainable debt burdens. She noted that such concerns were shared globally, as debt vulnerabilities affect economic stability. Moreover, she underscored that no partnership should compromise Pakistan’s financial independence.

The US envoy emphasised that Pakistan’s economic recovery depended on fully implementing the International Monetary Fund’s reform programme. She explained that the IMF’s suggested reforms aim to create a stable and sustainable economic structure. Furthermore, she noted that the World Bank was also contributing significant support to Pakistan’s development goals.

Responding to questions about strict conditions from multilateral lenders, Baker said these institutions encouraged reforms that would ultimately strengthen Pakistan’s economy. She added that the United States valued Pakistan’s sovereignty and had consistently supported Islamabad with goodwill. Additionally, she pointed out the long-standing economic ties between both nations.

Baker also mentioned that a potential visit by US President Donald Trump remained possible once his international schedule permitted. She reiterated that Washington’s relationship with Pakistan continued to evolve positively. With economic reforms underway, she noted that cooperation between both countries would play an important role in Pakistan’s financial stability.
