Security forces successfully foiled a terrorist attack on Cadet College Wana in South Waziristan on Monday. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), terrorists tried to breach the college’s security by ramming an explosive-laden vehicle into the main gate. The attack damaged the entrance and nearby structures, but quick and decisive action by security personnel prevented a larger tragedy.
ISPR reported that the terrorists, identified as members of the Indian-backed proxy group *Fitnat al-Khawarij*, were killed during the clearance operation. The statement said the attackers attempted to storm the college after the explosion but were trapped inside the administrative block by security forces. Both militants were eliminated after a brief exchange of fire.
The ISPR said the attackers were in contact with their handlers in Afghanistan during the operation. It noted that this incident disproves the Afghan Taliban government’s claims that no terrorists operate from its soil. Pakistan, the statement added, reserves the right to take action against terrorist networks and their leadership based in Afghanistan.
According to the army’s media wing, the terrorists aimed to repeat an attack similar to the 2014 Army Public School tragedy in Peshawar. Their plan, ISPR said, was to create fear among students in tribal areas who are pursuing quality education near their homes. Security forces, however, thwarted their attempt through bravery and professionalism, ensuring the safety of the college community.
Terrorist activities have increased across Pakistan over the past year, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. The escalation began after the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022. Since then, militants have repeatedly targeted security forces, police, and other law enforcement agencies. Monday’s failed attack highlights both the ongoing threat and the resolve of Pakistani forces to protect educational institutions and restore peace in the region.
