Following the orders of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab government has prepared laws with strict punishments against land-grabbing mafia, fraud and forgers. The Punjab Protection of Ownership of Immovable Property Ordinance was sent to the Punjab Assembly after the approval of the Chief Minister. Today, the ordinance will be presented in the Punjab Assembly session. According to the ordinance, illegal possession, forgery, fraud or forcible seizure of property will be punishable by 5 to 10 years in prison, while assisting in the illegal possession or sale of property will be punishable by 1 to 3 years in prison and a fine of up to Rs one million. According to the proposed law, if a company, society or institution is found guilty, the responsible officers will also be liable to punishment. Moreover, the property owner will have to submit the complaint directly to the concerned Deputy Commissioner. A false or malicious complaint will be punishable by one to five years in prison and a fine of up to 25 percent of the value of the property. At the direction of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, this ordinance will be presented in the Punjab Assembly today, after which it will become a formal law.
