The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced a public holiday on the first day of Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 AH, subject to moon sighting. The decision is significant as it marks the beginning of the Islamic new year and affects public institutions and services across the province.
According to an official notification, the holiday will be observed after confirmation by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. Moreover, authorities stated that the final date depends on the sighting of the new moon. Astronomical forecasts suggest Muharram may begin on June 17 in Pakistan.
In addition, the provincial government emphasized that the holiday will apply across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa once officially confirmed. Meanwhile, preparations are underway in anticipation of the religious month. Public offices, schools, and institutions are expected to adjust schedules accordingly.
Furthermore, Punjab has imposed Section 144 from Muharram 1 to 10 to ensure security and maintain order. Restrictions include a ban on pillion riding on Muharram 9 and 10, with limited exemptions. Authorities have also strengthened security arrangements around key religious gatherings.
Meanwhile, surveillance systems and checkpoints have been deployed around imambargahs in major cities. Officials say these measures aim to ensure public safety and promote religious harmony during the observance period. Security agencies remain on high alert throughout the first ten days of Muharram.
