ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering the farming community and addressing long-standing injustices faced by farmers across the country.
“PPP remains committed to respecting, empowering, and reviving the agricultural sector for a prosperous Pakistan,” said Central Information Secretary Shazia Marri, quoting Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari in a statement issued on Saturday. She added that no economy can thrive if its farmers are weak, reiterating the chairman’s belief that “strengthening the farmer means strengthening Pakistan.”

Marri highlighted Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s vision that true national progress depends on the prosperity of farmers, recalling that during the PPP government, Pakistan transitioned from a wheat shortage to becoming a wheat-exporting nation through pro-farmer policies.
She also underscored the challenges posed by climate change, calling for investment in sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture to ensure small farmers benefit from modern technology and fair market access. The PPP, she added, supports measures such as crop insurance, credit facilities, and transparent governance to safeguard farmers from economic and environmental risks.

Appreciating the government’s decision to permit wheat procurement, Marri said it was a long-standing PPP demand. However, she suggested that setting the support price at Rs4,000 instead of Rs3,500 per 40kg would have provided greater relief. She also welcomed the reduction of income tax from 45% to 15%, describing it as a vital step toward easing the financial burden on the agricultural sector.
