KARACHI – A young man from Bahawalpur, identified as Irfan Ahmed, allegedly died due to torture while in the custody of Karachi’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) on Friday. His body was later shifted to Jinnah Hospital for post-mortem examination.
According to Irfan’s family, he had come to Karachi from Ahmadpur East, Bahawalpur, for a short visit. On Wednesday morning, he went to Ayesha Manzil for breakfast with three friends when SIU personnel reportedly detained all four. The family said their phones were switched off afterward, and despite extensive searches, they were unable to find them.

The victim’s uncle received a call from the SIU office on Thursday evening informing him of Irfan’s death. Relatives alleged that Irfan, who was visiting Karachi for the first time, died as a result of police torture. They appealed to the Sindh chief minister and inspector general to ensure justice.
Following the incident, SSP SIU Amjad Sheikh suspended seven personnel, including three assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs), allegedly involved in the case. Police officials confirmed that an inquiry is underway and that the post-mortem will be conducted under a magistrate’s supervision to determine the exact cause of death.
