Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House today, according to a US official. The meeting comes just weeks after Pakistan and the United States signed a new trade deal. Officials say the visit signals improving ties between the two countries after years of tension. Trump has shown increased willingness to engage with Pakistan’s leadership in recent months.
Relations between Washington and Islamabad have warmed under Trump’s presidency. Meanwhile, US ties with India have faced new challenges. Trump has criticized India over trade issues, high tariffs, and visa restrictions. He also claimed credit for brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May. Analysts say these shifts have reshaped the diplomatic balance in South Asia.

The new trade deal, announced on July 31, includes a 19% US tariff on certain Pakistani goods. While Trump has reached a deal with Pakistan, talks with India remain stalled. At the same time, India appears to be adjusting its approach to China, seeking a more balanced position amid changing regional dynamics.
Trump earlier welcomed Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, at the White House—marking a rare high-level military visit without civilian leaders. A senior State Department official said the US and Pakistan are working on issues including counter-terrorism and trade. The official added that Trump is committed to deepening US engagement in the region, especially with key players like Pakistan.

The meeting also follows Trump’s Tuesday gathering with leaders from Muslim-majority nations, where he discussed the situation in Gaza. Pakistan has supported Trump’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize for easing India-Pakistan tensions. However, Islamabad continues to criticize US allies like Israel over their actions in the Middle East. The high-level talks reflect growing diplomatic activity during the UN General Assembly week.
