Saudi talents unite for 48hr film challenge

Published on: September 21, 2025 3:20 PM

The French Consulate in Jeddah recently hosted a special gathering for young Saudi creators ahead of the highly anticipated fifth 48Hr Film Challenge. The initiative, organised in collaboration with the Red Sea Film Foundation, Alliance Francaise, and Institut Francais, encourages aspiring filmmakers to produce a short film in just two days. The event brought together mentors, industry professionals, and participants to share ideas, inspire creativity, and prepare for the intense filmmaking competition scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

This year’s challenge has drawn strong interest, with 70 applicants competing for only 14 team spots, reflecting the growing popularity of the program. According to Zain Zedan, Red Sea Souk manager at the foundation, the quality of submissions has been exceptional, showing that Saudi youth are becoming increasingly passionate about storytelling. She noted that the program gives participants the rare opportunity to collaborate under pressure while still receiving support from experienced mentors.

The 48Hr Film Challenge is not only about competition but also about training and development. Participants gain valuable guidance through workshops and roundtable sessions led by Saudi and French mentors, helping them refine their storytelling, directing, and production skills. These interactions are designed to inspire creativity and prepare participants for future professional opportunities within Saudi Arabia’s growing film industry.

The program will conclude with screenings on Thursday, where two winning films will be announced. The winning teams will receive an exclusive opportunity to attend a residency in France in early 2026. Organisers said this prize aims to give emerging filmmakers international exposure and practical experience, ensuring they can bring fresh perspectives to the Saudi and global film scene.

French Consul General Mohammed Nehad highlighted the initiative’s importance in nurturing emerging filmmakers rather than established professionals. He explained that new talents represent the future of cinema by bringing originality, energy, and innovative vision to the craft. By supporting them at an early stage, he added, such programs ensure that creativity continues to thrive and that the next generation of Saudi filmmakers can confidently share their stories with the world.

With its blend of mentorship, creativity, and cultural exchange, the 48Hr Film Challenge has quickly become a key event in the Kingdom’s cultural calendar. It not only strengthens Franco-Saudi cultural ties but also empowers Saudi youth to step confidently into the spotlight and contribute to the nation’s evolving cinematic identity.
