Despite being the official host of Asia Cup 2025, the BCCI is avoiding Sunday’s India-Pakistan match in Dubai. Indian media reports suggest top BCCI officials will not attend the highly anticipated Group A clash. So far, not a single senior BCCI figure has arrived in Dubai. This silence is being viewed as a political statement rather than a scheduling issue. The absence has already sparked criticism and fueled speculation of a “silent boycott.”
Tensions between India and Pakistan have shaped the backdrop of this match. A recent terror attack in Pahalgam and India’s Operation Sindoor worsened bilateral ties. Many Indian fans and ex-players had demanded a full boycott of Pakistan matches. Still, the Indian government cleared the team to compete in multilateral events like the Asia Cup. However, officials fear backlash if they are seen attending the game.
Unlike previous tournaments where BCCI officials were visible, this time they’re keeping a low profile. Sources say top officials like Devajit Saikia, Arun Dhumal, and Rohan Desai are skipping the match. The only exception may be Rajeev Shukla, who could attend in an official ACC role. ICC Chairman Jay Shah is also skipping the event, reportedly attending meetings in the US.
The decision seems strategic rather than accidental. A BCCI insider said they got government approval to play, but attending publicly is risky. Some believe officials will only appear on camera if India wins. This cautious approach hints at the rising pressure cricket boards face due to politics. It also reflects the fragile state of Indo-Pak sports relations.
On the field, both teams are ready for a fierce contest. India comes with a strong squad, including stars like Gill, Bumrah, and Kuldeep. Pakistan, under new captain Salman Ali Agha, will depend on young talents like Saim Ayub and Abrar Ahmed. But off the field, the match is already overshadowed by controversy, adding tension to one of cricket’s biggest rivalries.
