The United States has approved an $825 million sale of 3,350 air-launched Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM) missiles to Ukraine, along with related equipment, officials confirmed on Thursday. Funding for the purchase will come from Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway, with a loan guarantee from the United States. The deal aims to enhance Kyiv’s military capabilities in defending against current and future threats.
The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said the sale will support Ukraine’s self-defense and regional security missions. It will also reinforce the foreign policy and national security goals of the United States, strengthening a partner country that promotes stability and economic progress in Europe.
The State Department has approved the potential sale, while the DSCA has notified Congress about the transaction. However, the deal still requires formal approval from the US Congress before it can proceed. Lawmakers will review the proposal to ensure it aligns with US national security and foreign policy objectives.
The sale comes amid ongoing tensions following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown little willingness to end hostilities, making additional military support from allies crucial for Ukraine’s defense. Analysts say the missile deal will help Kyiv maintain pressure on Russian forces.
Under former President Joe Biden, Washington committed over $65 billion in military aid to Ukraine. In contrast, President Donald Trump has emphasized that European countries should contribute more, while the United States continues limited direct assistance. The current deal reflects a balance between supporting Ukraine and encouraging European participation.
Experts note that the new missile sale could improve Ukraine’s operational range and precision targeting. The addition of ERAM air-launched missiles is expected to enhance the country’s defensive posture and reinforce its ability to counter threats in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
