Army has no role in political talks, reaffirms DG ISPR

Published on: June 27, 2025 4:46 PM

RAWALPINDI – Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, on Friday strongly stated that the Pakistan Army is not interested in engaging in political dialogues. He emphasized that the military should not be dragged into political matters under any circumstances.

In an interview with BBC Urdu, Lt Gen Chaudhry clarified that the armed forces only communicate with the “state of Pakistan”—a structure built under the Constitution with participation from all political parties. He noted, “Whatever government is in power is the face of the state, and the Pakistan Army performs its duties under that constitutional framework.”

He further stressed that the Pakistan Army is a professional institution that stays within its constitutional boundaries. “Our responsibilities are defined by the Constitution, and we do not deviate from that path,” he added. Lt Gen Chaudhry called on all political stakeholders to respect this neutrality and avoid involving the army in their disputes.

Addressing various conspiracy theories, the DG ISPR said that baseless rumors about the military’s political involvement are often spread for personal or party-based gains. He gave the example of how, during crucial operations, the army has always fulfilled its duties with complete dedication. “Our focus remains on defending the people, protecting the borders, and ensuring the sovereignty of Pakistan,” he affirmed.

Moreover, he raised concerns about political figures attempting to make the army controversial. “Why is the army’s name brought up during every political crisis?” he asked. He urged political leaders to reflect on their own roles instead of shifting blame onto state institutions. “Perhaps, they are trying to hide their failures behind such tactics,” he remarked.

Lt Gen Chaudhry concluded by reiterating the military’s longstanding apolitical stance and urged all parties to settle their differences through dialogue and democratic channels. He firmly stated that the armed forces would continue to serve the nation with loyalty, professionalism, and commitment, without becoming part of political battles.
