LAHORE – The city administration has rolled out a Rs 76 crore project to repair and restore over 272,000 streetlights across Lahore, aiming to enhance public safety and reduce energy wastage.
The large-scale effort will be carried out in six municipal zones, with a key focus on improving night-time visibility and addressing long-standing complaints about dark and unsafe streets. In the first phase, authorities will install 150,000 new streetlights to replace broken or outdated units.
Officials have allocated zone-wise funds for implementation: Data Zone will receive Rs 1.596 billion, Gulberg Zone Rs 1.49 billion, Nishtar Zone Rs 1.45 billion, Ravi Zone Rs 1.427 billion, Samanabad Zone Rs 993 million, and Shalimar Zone Rs 450 million.
According to city administrators, the initiative will not only make streets safer for pedestrians and motorists but also help reduce energy consumption by upgrading faulty lighting systems. They emphasized that a well-lit city plays a key role in preventing crime and accidents.
Moreover, this streetlight repair scheme is part of a wider urban renewal agenda aimed at modernizing Lahore’s infrastructure. Authorities believe that consistent lighting and better public services can improve residents’ quality of life.
