LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday paid a surprise visit to tehsil headquarters (THQ) hospital in Raiwind without protocol. He inspected different wards, inquired after the patients and asked about the facilities being provided in the hospital. He expressed displeasure over nonappearance of staff at reception and reprimanded the medical superintendent on poor cleanliness condition and dirtiness of washbasin in the operation theatre of the hospital. He said that wastage of the hard-earned money of the poor nation in such a way was shameful, adding that he would not allow wastage of precious resources of the nation. He said that he has taken the responsibility of reforming the hospitals and would not rest until the availability of quality health facilities to the patients was ensured. The chief minister took strict notice of closure of pharmacy and store in the hospital. He said that millions of rupees have been spent on new hospital to facilitate the masses, but the situation was lamentable. He visited the emergency ward, admonished the MS and asked him if he would like to treat his relative in such dirty conditions? The chief minister also expressed displeasure over falling of water from air-conditioners of a ward, which was damaging the wall, and said that cleanliness and improvement of hygiene system was the responsibility of the administration. He reprimanded the MS on seeing the sanitary staff without uniform and said that despite his clear directions, not wearing uniform by the hospital staff was deplorable. Shahbaz said that Punjab government was spending billions of rupees on providing quality and modern healthcare facilities to the people and modern hospitals were being set up throughout the province. Under this programme, a new hospital has been constructed at a cost of millions of rupees at Raiwind so that best medical facilities could be made available to the people at their doorstep. However, he expressed sorrow over witnessing unhygienic condition, non-availability of quality medical facilities and medical staff during his visit to Raiwind THQ. He said that appointment of orthopedic surgeon has been made in the hospital but he has still not joined his duty, adding that there was no gynecologist present in the hospital and only one nurse was on duty in emergency ward. The chief minister said that service to ailing humanity is a form of worship and there should be a spirit of serving the humanity. Shahbaz also inquired from the patients and their attendants about the treatment facilities being provided in the hospital, who told that hospital is splendid but there is lack of healthcare facilities and medical staff, adding that they face difficulties due to non-presence of staff at noon. Shahbaz said that fruits of resources worth billions of rupees provided for public health facilities should reach the patients at every cost. The chief minister said that he is determined to improve the situation of the hospitals and expressed hope that he would not be disappointed again. Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, while addressing a meeting thorough video link, said that he was grieved over the situation regarding cleanliness and provision of medical facilities during his visit to district headquarters (DHQ) hospital in Kasur. He said that all-out resources and powers have been provided to the hospital administration, adding that improvement of medical facilities and sanitation in the hospital is the responsibility of the administration. He said that officers not serving the ailing humanity have no right to remain on their posts, adding that there should be a system of accountability for setting the matters of hospitals right.
