Police break up fight after row broke out among students at PU

Published on: February 11, 2017 6:17 AM

LAHORE: Police were called in after a clash erupted between two groups of students at the Punjab University hostel on Friday.

Six students were injured in the violent clash.

According to details, a row broke out between two groups of students at Hostel No 1, which turned violent and led to stone pelting on the main road of hostels prompting other students to join the clash.

Sources at PU told Daily Times that the clash started after a group of students belonging to the Islami Jamiat Tulaba (IJT) allegedly stopped male and female students from co-studying. Soon the students started pelting stones at one another, however, the situation was controlled after teachers and police officials intervened. Police also fired teargas shells to disperse students.

Upon being informed about the clash between students. Punjab University (PU) Registrar Professor Dr Naeem Khan, Hall Council Chairman Prof Dr Abid Hussain Chaudhry, Resident Office Abdullah Khan Durrani, security officials and guards reached the spot.

Professor Dr Naeem Khan held negotiations with both the groups after which students dispersed peacefully. On the directives of Acting Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Taqi Zahid Butt, Dr Naeem Khan has constituted a three-member inquiry committee to probe into the matter under the supervision of Hall Council Chairman Prof Dr Abid Hussain Chaudhry. The committee will present its report in three days.

Later, talking to media, Professor Dr Naeem Khan said that the PU administration had taken immediate steps to control the situation at the right time to avoid any big incident of violence. He said that action would be taken against those involved in the incident as per the recommendations of the inquiry committee. He said that the university administration would ensure peace on campus at all cost and incidents of violence would not be tolerated.

When contacted, a spokesman for the IJT denied involvement of IJT activists in the incident, and said that Pakhtun students from Balochistan tortured students who were on the way to attend classes.
