DADU: The ratio of child marriage in Pakistan was estimated to be around 24 per cent, however, in Sindh the ratio was around 70 per cent, said civil society activists on Sunday. They demanded that at least one month jail is a nominal sentence for the people arranging child marriages that cast negative impact on society. Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Mashooque Birhamani, Riaz Ahmed Birhoi and other members of Sujag Sansar Organisation (SSO) quoting a survey conducted by them in Dadu district had revealed that the ratio of child marriage in the area was around 49 per cent. “In Sindh, due to old traditions, feudal system and lack of education, child marriages were a big problem,” the said, adding that the SSO with the support of Norwegian Human Rights Fund (NHRF) was working since 2010 and its efforts had yielded positive results. They said that the SSO under this project is making efforts to transform these places from anti women to pro women and strong forums in preventing child marriages.
