Sir: About half a week ago, I purchased two pieces of a famous imported brand of chocolate. Each piece cost me 65 PKR per piece. On January 22, 2017, I purchased, once again, two pieces of same brand of imported chocolate from a different location. This time, it cost me 90 PKR per piece. This I did intentionally in order to get myself a comparison of prices on imported consumer items as I was told by one of my friends that virtually there is no price control on these items in our beloved homeland. Today, I got the information verified. It is safe to say that if you visit 10 different shops asking price of the same imported consumer item such as mentioned herein, you will be given 10 different prices for the same brand and range of expiration date. Moreover, most of the imported consumer items that are sold on lavish-looking outlets are expired yet there is no return or reduction in price rather they have displayed these items ostentatiously with unheard-of arrogance. This happens as there is no check regarding price and quality of these items by appropriate authorities in Pakistan. Where is price control mechanism? Doesn’t our government care about its citizens? Is this how responsible administrations discharge their services toward the masses and the state? When will we Pakistanis become a nation? When will our government realise that they owe the public loads and it is about time they start delivering? Like me, numerous other sensitive minds in our country ask themselves questions like these almost every day. Each day ends asking, ‘when will we come out of the predicaments’? AWAIS MUSHTAQ Multan
