Pakistan has extradited a British national wanted by the authorities in the United Kingdom for murder. He was flown to the UK on Tuesday.
“Shahid Muhammad is being extradited by officers from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, with the support of the National Crime Agency, the British High Commission in Islamabad, the Crown Prosecution Service and local authorities in Pakistan,” a spokesman for British High commission told Daily times in Islamabad.
The spokesman said the wanted man was due to appear in court on Thursday (today) to be charged of eight counts of murder following a house fire in Birkby, Huddersfield in 2002.
Shahid Mohammed, aged 36, formerly of Huddersfield, will be formally charged with the murders of five children and three adults, when he appears at Leeds Magistrates Court.
He has been held in prison in Pakistan since he was located and arrested in Rawalpindi on 22 January 2015, following a joint operation between West Yorkshire Police, the NCA and Pakistani authorities.
This is the second extradition from Pakistan in 10 years. Earlier, Mohammed Zubair was extradited in May 2016. He was found guilty of murder at Bradford Crown Court in February 2017. His extradition also followed an investigation and extradition request from West Yorkshire Police.
