Punjab proposes 7pc salary increase

Published on: June 16, 2026 9:22 PM

The Punjab government presented a Rs5.903 trillion budget for fiscal year 2026-27, proposing a 7 percent salary increase for employees. The budget also includes a 3.5 percent pension raise and significant allocations for development sectors. The measures aim to support public welfare, infrastructure growth and economic stability across the province.

Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman unveiled the budget in the provincial assembly after receiving cabinet approval. The government set a provincial revenue target of Rs1.209 trillion and allocated Rs752 billion for development projects. Officials said the budget reflects the government’s commitment to sustained growth and public service delivery.

The education sector received one of the largest allocations, with Rs750 billion earmarked for schools and higher education. The government also set aside Rs27 billion for the laptop scheme and Rs15 billion for the Honhaar Scholarship Programme. Authorities said these initiatives would promote digital learning and expand educational opportunities for students.

Meanwhile, the health sector received 10 percent of the overall budget. The government pledged to improve healthcare access and modernize services throughout Punjab. Officials said investments in health infrastructure and service delivery would help enhance public welfare and support long-term development goals.

Following the budget’s approval, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said Punjab would continue prioritizing public relief and development projects. She stated that the province had made a substantial contribution toward national defence and federal expenditures. The government maintained that the new budget would help accelerate progress while ensuring financial discipline.
