The incident occurred in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea near Greece, raising concerns among participating states about violations of maritime law and international humanitarian regulations.
The foreign ministers described the flotilla as a peaceful civilian initiative intended to draw global attention to the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza. They said the attack on the vessels and the detention of humanitarian activists amounted to serious breaches of international law.
The statement further called on the international community to uphold legal and moral responsibilities, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and ensure accountability for actions that may violate international norms.
The incident has also sparked public reactions in several countries. In Italy, thousands of people staged demonstrations in major cities including Rome, Milan, Naples, and Turin, expressing anger over the interception of the aid convoy. Protesters demanded protection for humanitarian missions and criticized the use of force in international waters.
Humanitarian groups involved in the flotilla have stated that their mission was non-violent and focused solely on delivering relief supplies to civilians affected by ongoing conflict in Gaza.
