The government has moved to introduce restrictions on dual citizenship for public sector employees, including diplomats and foreign service officers. The proposal is significant as it aims to tighten rules governing national loyalty and transparency within the civil service. The draft has been submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office for approval.
According to the Establishment Division, a complete ban has been proposed for diplomats and foreign service personnel holding dual nationality. Serving ambassadors with dual citizenship would be required to renounce their second nationality. The move follows recommendations from the Secretaries Committee.

Moreover, the proposed rules require all government employees to declare their own and their family members’ dual citizenship status. Officials would need to submit these details within three months. The measure is intended to ensure proper documentation of citizenship records.
Additionally, new employees would be required to obtain prior government permission before acquiring foreign nationality. While existing dual citizens in government service may retain their status, future acquisition will be strictly regulated. Retired diplomats with dual citizenship will be allowed to keep it under the proposed framework.
