Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Meets Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi; Emphasizes Reforms and Public Relief

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi on April 6, 2026, in Islamabad to review the performance, ongoing reforms, and future development plans of Pakistan Railways. The meeting focused on ensuring efficient operations, improving public services, and strengthening the financial sustainability of the national railway network.

During the meeting, Abbasi briefed the Prime Minister on operational matters, highlighting that in view of the ongoing Gulf tensions and current economic challenges, no increase in fares for any operational train services would be implemented. The minister emphasized that the decision aims to provide relief to the public while maintaining essential services without additional financial burden.

PM Shehbaz stressed the importance of reforming Pakistan Railways into a modern, safe, and reliable transportation system. He directed the ministry to accelerate ongoing reform measures, enhance revenue generation, and optimize resources to provide better travel facilities for passengers. The Prime Minister also emphasized the need for timely completion of all railway projects, ensuring efficiency and transparency throughout the process.

The meeting also underscored the government’s commitment to public welfare and sustainable development. PM Shehbaz highlighted that strengthening institutional performance, including that of Pakistan Railways, is a key priority for the administration. He called for continuous monitoring and reporting of progress to ensure that citizens benefit from improved infrastructure, affordable travel, and safer journeys across the country.

Both leaders agreed to maintain a focus on modernizing railway operations, adopting digital technologies where possible, and improving passenger experiences.
