Bill Cosby ordered to pay $US19m for historical sexual assault - ABC News

A California jury has found Bill Cosby liable for sexual assault Donna Motsinger, a former waitress, in 1972, marking the latest development in a long series of legal cases involving the once-celebrated entertainer.

The court ordered Cosby to pay $19.25 million in damages to Motsinger. The verdict adds to the legal challenges faced by the former television star, who previously served three years in prison after being convicted of assaulting Andrea Constand. That conviction was later overturned, leading to his release in 2021.

Once widely known as “America’s Dad” for his role in The Cosby Show, Cosby built a vast fortune through television, comedy albums, endorsements and creative projects such as Fat Albert. At the height of his career, his net worth was estimated between $300 million and $400 million, supported by extensive investments in art and real estate alongside his wife, Camille Cosby.

Recent reports suggest his wealth has declined to around $200 million, largely tied up in property and art collections. Financial pressures, including tax liabilities and mortgage obligations, have also been reported.

Cosby has faced accusations of sexual misconduct from more than 60 women over several decades. The issue gained renewed public attention in 2014 when comedian Hannibal Buress referenced the allegations during a stand-up performance, sparking broader scrutiny.

His cases became a focal point during the #MeToo movement, which encouraged survivors to come forward with their experiences.

While some legal proceedings remain ongoing, the latest verdict represents another significant moment in the downfall of a once-prominent figure in American entertainment.
