Iran warns of retaliation targeting power plants

Iran Accuses US and Israel of Causing Strait Crisis

Dubai: Iran has warned that it will retaliation against any attack on its electricity sector by targeting power plants in Israel and facilities supplying electricity to US bases in the region, according to a statement issued by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Monday.

The statement came amid heightened tensions following a warning from Donald Trump, who said Iranian power plants could be targeted if Tehran failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. The strategic waterway is vital for global energy shipments and has become a focal point in the ongoing conflict.

In its response, the Revolutionary Guards emphasized a policy of proportional retaliation. “If you hit electricity, we hit electricity,” the statement said, underscoring Iran’s intent to respond in kind to any strikes on its infrastructure.

The statement also appeared to walk back earlier threats regarding desalination plants in Gulf countries, clarifying that Iran does not intend to target facilities that provide drinking water to civilians. Officials accused the US of misrepresenting Tehran’s position on the issue.

The latest exchange highlights the risk of further escalation in the region, particularly in the energy sector, where attacks could have widespread economic and humanitarian consequences. Power infrastructure is considered critical not only for civilian life but also for military operations, raising concerns about potential disruptions across multiple countries.

Analysts warn that targeting energy facilities could deepen the conflict and destabilize global markets, especially if it impacts oil production or transport routes linked to the Strait of Hormuz. The situation remains volatile, with both sides signaling readiness for further confrontation.
