Pakistan’s security forces responded swiftly to what officials described as unprovoked firing by Afghan Taliban fighters along the border in the Torkham and Tirah sectors. According to security sources, clashes erupted at three separate points and continued for nearly an hour before calm returned. Authorities stated that troops acted immediately to silence the aggression and secure the frontier against further escalation.
In an official statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s foreign media spokesman, Musharraf Zaidi, said Pakistan would respond firmly to any additional provocation. He emphasized that the country remains committed to protecting its citizens and safeguarding territorial integrity. Officials confirmed that all Pakistan Army soldiers remained safe during the exchange, while a checkpost belonging to Afghan forces was destroyed in retaliatory action.

The latest incident comes amid rising tensions between Islamabad and the Afghan Taliban administration, which have flared repeatedly since late 2025. In October last year, intense cross-border clashes reportedly left more than 200 Taliban and affiliated fighters dead, while 23 Pakistani soldiers lost their lives. Despite subsequent diplomatic engagements and multiple rounds of talks, efforts to establish a lasting ceasefire have failed to deliver sustainable peace.

Pakistan maintains that militant groups continue to operate from Afghan soil and carry out attacks inside its territory, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Officials say Islamabad has repeatedly urged Kabul to take decisive action against these elements but claims meaningful steps have not followed. In response to escalating violence, Pakistan previously conducted what it described as precision strikes targeting suspected militant hideouts in Afghan provinces.
Security challenges have intensified in recent weeks, highlighted by a February 17 attack in Bajaur district that killed 11 security personnel. During the follow-up operation, authorities reported that 12 militants were neutralized. As cross-border tensions persist and militant incidents continue, Pakistan has signaled that it will maintain a robust defensive posture while keeping diplomatic channels open to prevent further deterioration.
