KP CM strongly defends prisoner rights, criticizes health access limits

Published on: February 22, 2026 1:44 PM

Sohail Afridi said the party is not doing politics on health issues and stressed that every citizen, including political leaders, deserves constitutional rights without discrimination. He made these remarks while addressing a ceremony at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar. He added that respect for the constitution must remain above political differences. Furthermore, he called for equal treatment under the law for all individuals.

Afridi stated that the Constitution and the law are being ignored in the case of Imran Khan, claiming that basic rights are not fully protected. He argued that access to a personal physician represents a fundamental legal right for prisoners. Additionally, he said that denying medical access contradicts established principles of justice. Therefore, he urged authorities to follow constitutional provisions in all circumstances.

The chief minister further remarked that the constitution and legal system have effectively been “imprisoned” in Adiala Jail, using strong language to express concern. He emphasized that prisoner treatment must align with fundamental rights guaranteed in the country’s legal framework. Moreover, he said that fair medical access should apply equally to all detainees. Consequently, he called for transparent procedures regarding healthcare decisions.

During the event, Afridi also congratulated newly elected journalists and praised the Peshawar Press Club for conducting regular elections without delay. He highlighted the importance of a strong and independent media in supporting democratic institutions. In addition, he said journalism should remain free and protected, especially in challenging environments. He noted that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa faced years of security challenges, yet media professionals continued their work responsibly.

Furthermore, Afridi announced plans to increase financial support for journalists and media institutions in the province. He said the government would raise press club grants and expand endowment funds to strengthen professional capacity. At the same time, he stressed that democracy becomes stronger when institutions work independently and transparently. Finally, he reiterated that his administration aims to support governance, rights, and institutional stability across the region.
