
China conducted naval and air patrols around Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea on Saturday, asserting its territorial claim despite the shoal lying within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
The China Southern Theater Command stated that these patrols are part of enhanced combat readiness operations aimed at countering “infringement provocations” by other countries in the region, emphasizing China’s sovereignty claims.

Earlier this week, the militaries of the Philippines and the United States carried out joint exercises near Scarborough Shoal, marking the 11th such drill since November 2023 to strengthen regional cooperation.
China’s increased presence follows a series of military maneuvers and patrols in January, reflecting rising tensions in the disputed waters and signaling Beijing’s intention to maintain continuous oversight of the shoal area.

The Philippines has yet to officially respond to China’s recent patrols, while the United States continues to support Manila’s maritime operations, highlighting ongoing international interest in South China Sea security dynamics.
Analysts warn that repeated patrols and joint exercises in contested areas may heighten regional tensions, but both sides stress the need to manage disputes to avoid direct conflict while asserting strategic interests.
