Hollywood and fans around the world are mourning the loss of acclaimed Home Alone star Catherine O’Hara, who died on January 30, 2026, at the age of 71 following a brief illness, her representatives confirmed.

O’Hara rose to international fame for her role as Kate McCallister, the frazzled but loving mother in the 1990 holiday classic Home Alone, a film that has remained a fixture of holiday viewing traditions for more than three decades. Beyond that iconic part, her career spanned more than 50 years across film, television, and comedy, earning her multiple awards and widespread admiration.

Born in Toronto in 1954, O’Hara began her career in sketch comedy and improv with the influential SCTV troupe in the 1970s, which helped launch the careers of many comedic talents.  She went on to appear in a wide array of films, including Beetlejuice, Best in Show, and After Hours, showcasing a versatility that blended sharp wit with genuine emotional depth.

Television audiences also came to love her portrayal of Moira Rose on the hit sitcom Schitt’s Creek, a role that brought her Emmy and Golden Globe awards and introduced her to a new generation of fans. In recent years, she continued to work across genres, with roles in projects like The Studio and The Last of Us, earning both critical praise and awards recognition.

Tributes have poured in from fellow actors, colleagues, and fans, with many remembering her as a comedic genius whose warmth and talent resonated across generations.  She is survived by her husband, production designer Bo Welch, and their two sons.
