Development work under the flagship programme “Maryam Nawaz Ka Sona Punjab” has been formally launched in 51 cities across Punjab, marking a major step towards improving urban infrastructure and civic facilities.
Chairing a special meeting on Sunday, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed that the first phase of the project be completed by June 2026, with a focus on sewerage systems and other essential infrastructure in every city.
The chief minister personally assumed direct monitoring of the Punjab Development Plan to ensure transparency, efficiency and timely completion.
To ensure effective implementation, provincial and district-level control rooms are being established for real-time monitoring of projects and swift resolution of public complaints.
Under the plan, 5,887 kilometres of sewerage lines and 181 drainage lines will be constructed across 51 cities. Over 33,000 new manhole covers will be installed, while production of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes for sewerage is underway.
Deputy Commissioners of Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bhakkar, Vehari, Wazirabad, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura and Kasur briefed the chief minister on progress and city-specific plans. In Multan, 232 km of sewerage lines, 81 pumps, 51 generators and 64 km of urban roads will be constructed, alongside expansion and beautification of Boson, Khanewal, Shujaabad and Nishtar Roads. Gujranwala will see 131 km of sewerage lines, 2 km of drainage lines, a wastewater treatment plant and 16 machinery units, marking the city’s largest-ever development package. In Dera Ghazi Khan, sewerage and drainage systems worth over Rs12 billion are being completed in two zones, the Manika Canal is being converted into an agricultural canal, and 140 km of sewerage lines are being constructed and rehabilitated. Bhakkar will get a 42-inch sewerage line, 100 new manholes, solar-powered disposal stations, as well as parks, walkways and public washrooms. Vehari is receiving projects worth Rs6.7 billion, while Sheikhupura is seeing 95 km of sewerage lines laid along with expedited completion of beautification projects.
The chief minister directed improvements in cleanliness and civic management in Sheikhupura, praised the revamping of District Headquarters Hospital Kasur, and ordered further enhancement of sanitation services and urgent restoration of sewerage systems in Pattoki.
CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that every project under the Punjab Development Plan must be completed transparently and on time, ensuring development reaches every street and neighborhood across the province.
Moreover, normal life was restored in Murree following 30 hours of continuous heavy snowfall, with traffic and tourism activities resuming after major roads were cleared.
According to a handout issued on Sunday, a dedicated Snow Clearance Cell, set up on the chief minister’s directives, worked round-the-clock to remove snow from 185 kilometres of key roads, despite snow layers reaching up to two feet in several areas. State-of-the-art machinery, including mechanical snow sweepers and heavy-duty bulldozers, was deployed, while continuous salt spreading prevented skidding and accidents.
CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif lauded the teams’ swift and coordinated response, highlighting the government’s commitment to public safety, uninterrupted mobility, and tourism revival in the region.
