Apple to overhaul Siri, turning it into AI chatbot in iOS 17

Published on: January 22, 2026 6:25 PM

iOS 17 Update Makes Apples Siri Smarter Than Ever

Apple is preparing a major overhaul of its virtual assistant Siri, transforming it into an AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new Siri, internally codenamed “Campos,” will be fully integrated into iOS 17 and may be a central highlight of Apple’s WWDC presentation in June 2026.

The revamped Siri will accept both voice and text inputs, moving beyond simple voice commands to provide conversational, AI-driven interactions. Apple senior vice president Craig Federighi previously stated that Siri should function more like a chatbot, with AI capabilities “integrated so it’s there within reach whenever you need it.” The upcoming changes reflect Apple’s effort to catch up in the AI race, particularly after seeing the rapid success of competing chatbots.

Apple will replace Siri with a chatbot in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 27. Codenamed Campos, it uses a custom model based on Google Gemini and is built into devices. Apple has reportedly explored partnerships with several AI firms, including OpenAI and Anthropic, before finalising a collaboration with Google’s Gemini. This partnership aims to bring cutting-edge AI capabilities to Apple devices while keeping Siri competitive in an increasingly crowded smart assistant market.

The company has faced criticism for lagging behind competitors in AI integration, with several delayed attempts to launch a more personalised Siri. The new AI-driven assistant is expected to offer enhanced contextual understanding, smarter suggestions, and improved user interactions across Apple’s ecosystem.

Industry experts note that Apple’s move could position it to compete not only in software but also in AI-driven hardware, as OpenAI and other tech giants are expanding into consumer devices. With iOS 17, Apple hopes to redefine Siri as a central AI companion, blending convenience, intelligence, and accessibility for users worldwide.
