Israeli strikes kill 13 in Gaza, threaten to unravel ceasefire

Published on: January 10, 2026 11:07 AM

CAIRO: Israeli air strikes on Thursday killed 13 Palestinians in multiple locations across the Gaza Strip, medics said, revising the earlier toll of seven. Four people, including children, were killed and three others wounded in a strike on a tent in western Khan Yunis, while another strike east of the city claimed one life near an Israeli military area.

In northern Gaza, an airstrike hit a school sheltering displaced families in Jabalia, killing one person, and another strike killed a person in a tent near Deir al Balah in central Gaza. Four additional fatalities occurred in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighbourhood, bringing the total confirmed deaths from Thursday’s attacks to 13.

Gaza health officials say 13 people, including a child, were killed by Israeli strikes across the strip.

The Israeli military said its strikes targeted multiple “rocket launch pits” after a rocket was fired from Gaza toward Israel. The military claimed the rocket fell short, landing near a hospital in Gaza, and accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire agreement.

The October ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has yet to move beyond its first phase, under which major fighting halted, Israel partially withdrew from Gaza, and Hamas released prisoners in exchange for Palestinian detainees. Future phases, as envisioned by US President Donald Trump’s plan, would include Hamas disarming, Israel completing its withdrawal, and an internationally supported administration rebuilding Gaza.

Progress toward the next steps has stalled, with more than 400 Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers killed since the ceasefire took effect. Nearly all of Gaza’s more than two million residents continue to live in temporary homes or damaged structures in the areas where Israeli forces withdrew and Hamas regained control.
