HBO and HBO Max are set to expand the Game of Thrones universe with the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on January 18, 2026. The new prequel, based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, takes a different approach from previous Westeros stories, focusing on personal journeys rather than large-scale wars and dragons.

Set nearly 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a traveling hedge knight with strong moral values, and his young squire Egg, who is secretly Aegon Targaryen, a prince destined for greatness. Together, they journey across the Seven Kingdoms, visiting tourneys, villages, and royal courts, meeting both nobles and commoners along the way.

While their adventures are filled with action and discovery, political tensions and hidden power struggles gradually draw them into the heart of Westeros intrigue. The evolving bond between mentor and student forms the emotional core of the story, offering fans a more intimate perspective on the realm.

Peter Claffey stars as Ser Duncan the Tall, with Dexter Sol Ansell portraying Egg. The supporting cast features Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, Daniel Ings, Tanzyn Crawford, and Sam Spruell. Season 1 will consist of six episodes, providing a focused, character-driven narrative while preserving the rich world-building that fans expect.
