
Jeremy O. Harris, the Tony-nominated playwright and actor from Emily in Paris, has been detained in Japan after authorities discovered illegal drugs in his possession at Okinawa’s Naha Airport.
The 36-year-old was stopped on November 16 when customs officials reportedly found 0.78 grams of crystal containing MDMA in his tote bag. Harris is currently held in Tomigusuku city under strict Japanese drug laws.
On December 4, Japanese authorities formally filed a criminal accusation, and legal proceedings are expected to begin soon. It remains unclear whether Harris has retained legal representation in the country.

Harris gained prominence as a playwright while studying at Yale University, where he wrote Slave Play. The play debuted on Broadway in 2019, earning 12 Tony Award nominations, the most ever for a non-musical production.
As an actor, he is best known for portraying Grégory Elliot Duprée in Emily in Paris and has appeared in the Gossip Girl reboot and What We Do in the Shadows, expanding his international fame.
Years earlier, Harris gained viral attention with a story about Adele, further increasing his public recognition. His arrest in Japan has sparked widespread media coverage and discussions about the country’s strict drug regulations.
