
QUETTA: With polling scheduled for Dec 28, preparations for the local government elections in Quetta district have moved into their final phase. Election officials confirmed that a total of 2,710 candidates are set to contest various positions across the district, marking a highly competitive electoral process.

The scrutiny of nomination papers has been completed, and candidates have been notified that Nov 28 is the final date for filing appeals with the appellate tribunal. These appeals apply to cases where returning officers have either accepted or rejected nomination papers. Officials emphasised that the appeals window is crucial for ensuring transparency and fairness ahead of polling day.
Quetta district comprises four town municipal corporations — Zarghoon, Chiltan, Sariab and Takatu. Together, they include 172 union councils (UCs) and 641 wards, making the upcoming elections one of the most extensive local government exercises in the region. A total of 3,150 nomination papers were submitted, of which 2,710 were approved and 440 rejected. Among the contenders, 33 women candidates have also filed to participate.

In Zarghoon Town, which consists of 46 UCs and 161 wards, 943 nomination papers were received. Of these, 767 were approved while 176 were rejected. Chiltan Town, with its 46 UCs and 173 wards, saw 703 submissions, with 616 approvals and 87 rejections.
Similarly, Sariab Town received 561 nomination papers for its 38 UCs and 145 wards. Election authorities approved 483 and rejected 78. Takatu Town saw the highest number of submissions — 943 nomination papers for 42 UCs and 162 wards — with 844 approved and 99 rejected.

Officials said preparations for ballot papers, polling staff deployment and security arrangements are underway. They added that polling stations will be finalised in the coming days to ensure smooth and well-coordinated local government elections across Quetta district.
