PTI chief Gohar warns of 'new direction' after by-poll setback

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan voiced disappointment over the party’s loss in recent by-elections, claiming that the public mandate was still not being respected. He warned that if the situation continued, the party might consider pursuing “another path.”

Speaking to the media near Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Gohar said PTI had failed to retain its Haripur seat and alleged deliberate manipulation of results. “If we had known our mandate would once again be rejected, we would not have participated in the by-polls,” he said, adding that the party had won every polling station in Haripur with a lead of 27,000 votes.

Gohar criticized what he described as “someone else’s control” prevailing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other areas,” calling it an injustice. He claimed that PTI had endured immense hardships believing their mandate would finally be honoured, but were again denied recognition.

He warned that public frustration and intolerance could rise, asserting that withholding even a won seat was “a bad omen for democracy.” He stressed that PTI would not be provoked but emphasized that patience was wearing thin due to restrictions on meetings, despite court orders.

The chairman added that the party would follow instructions from PTI founder Imran Khan precisely and described the behaviour toward the party as “unlawful and unconstitutional.” He said PTI relies on the public mandate rather than videos or narratives.

Gohar also announced a prayer gathering in Peshawar on November 26 and reiterated that democracy must prevail in Pakistan. “This setup will not survive; it is operating only on the strength of an amendment,” he remarked, warning that the situation demanded attention to uphold electoral integrity.
