Meta-owned WhatsApp is bringing back its “About” status feature, allowing users to post short text updates similar to Instagram Notes. The feature lets users share what they’re up to, why they may not be available, or start conversations with their contacts.

Unlike Instagram Notes, which allows short videos and music integrations, WhatsApp’s “About” status focuses on text updates. Users can now see others’ updates at the top of one-on-one chats and on profiles, and can reply directly within a chat. By default, updates disappear after 24 hours, but users can adjust the timer or visibility to suit their preferences.
WhatsApp notes that the “About” status is actually its original feature, predating its emphasis on secure messaging. The company hopes giving it more prominence will increase user engagement and could lead to future enhancements similar to Instagram Notes.

The update will be rolled out to mobile users starting this week, signaling WhatsApp’s continued efforts to expand social features within its messaging platform.
