Delhi orders fire safety crackdown after tragedy

Published on: June 6, 2026 2:00 AM

Delhi authorities have announced a citywide crackdown on fire safety violations after a hotel blaze killed 21 people. The fire, one of the deadliest in the capital in recent years, also claimed the lives of several foreign nationals. The action is expected to affect guest houses, hotels, and commercial establishments across the city.

The blaze erupted at Flourish Stay, a bed-and-breakfast in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area, on Wednesday morning. Police said 47 guests were inside the building when the fire broke out. More than 40 people were taken to hospitals, while several remained in critical condition following the incident.

Authorities have registered a criminal case and arrested the building owner. The Delhi government said all establishments operating in violation of fire safety regulations and building bylaws would face strict action. Non-compliant properties could be sealed, while those responsible may face prosecution.

According to media reports, the victims included foreign nationals from Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mozambique, and Liberia. India’s foreign ministry said it was coordinating with the relevant embassies and providing necessary assistance. Officials added that many of the foreign guests had travelled to Delhi for medical treatment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Preliminary reports suggested the hotel may have lacked adequate ventilation and emergency exits. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the victims’ families, while local authorities pledged a thorough inquiry and promised action against anyone found responsible for violating safety standards.
