Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged closer cooperation with Thailand on Friday as King Maha Vajiralongkorn made his first official state visit to China since ascending the throne nine years ago.
Describing the two nations as like “family,” Xi said China would strengthen strategic alignment with Thailand, particularly through projects such as the China-Thailand railway and joint initiatives in AI, aerospace, and digital economy.
King Vajiralongkorn, accompanied by Queen Suthida, chose China as his first major overseas visit, highlighting the significance Bangkok places on strengthening long-term bilateral relations with Beijing after 50 years of diplomatic ties.

In recent years, China has become Thailand’s largest trading partner, shifting from its previous Cold War-era alliance with the United States, and both countries have increasingly cooperated on border security and economic initiatives.
The two nations recently intensified efforts to curb telecommunications fraud and illegal gambling networks operating in Myanmar, including extraditing Chinese national She Zhijiang, who had been in Thai custody since 2022.

Additionally, China mediated a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia after summer border clashes caused multiple casualties, although tensions have continued with recent accusations of fresh skirmishes along the disputed border areas.
