China, Spain sign key agreements during king’s visit

Published on: November 12, 2025 10:39 PM

Spanish King Felipe VI and Chinese President Xi Jinping signed agreements Wednesday to boost cooperation in language exchanges, trade, and technology, highlighting the growing strategic partnership between the two nations.

The visit marks the first official state trip by a Spanish monarch to China since 2007, while Xi last visited Spain in 2018, reinforcing mutual diplomatic engagement and long-term bilateral relations.

During the ceremony at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, Felipe and Queen Letizia were welcomed with a 21-gun salute and military band performance, reflecting the ceremonial importance of the historic visit.

President Xi emphasized that China aims to strengthen a comprehensive strategic partnership with Spain, promote dynamic development, and expand international influence while also importing more Spanish products, without specifying the items.

The visit underscores potential collaboration in renewable energy and artificial intelligence, as Spain relies heavily on green technologies and critical raw materials from China to advance its energy transition and reduce fossil fuel dependency.

Recent Chinese investments in Spain include CATL’s battery factory joint venture with Stellantis and agreements with Envision and Hygreen Energy to develop green hydrogen infrastructure, highlighting expanding economic ties between the countries.
