Imran Khan demands recognition of Achakzai, Nasir Abbas as opposition leaders

Published on: October 30, 2025 10:22 AM

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan has voiced concern over the government’s delay in notifying Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Raja Nasir Abbas as leaders of the opposition in the Senate and National Assembly, respectively.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Khan urged the government to issue the notifications without further delay, calling the holdup “deeply concerning.” While the PTI founder remains incarcerated, he has not denied ownership of the messages posted from his social media account.

“The large turnout of the people at Charsadda, Khyber, and Karak Jalsas indicate an increasing public awareness and a shared commitment to protecting their rights. I extend my appreciation to all the organizers for successfully continuing the public outreach campaign in an…

The post also praised the recent political rallies in Charsadda, Khyber, and Karak, citing them as proof of the public’s growing awareness and commitment to protecting their rights. Khan appreciated the organisers for their efforts and urged PTI supporters, alongside the Tehreek Tahaffuz-i-Aaeen-i-Pakistan movement, to intensify their “struggle for true freedom.”

Addressing internal party matters, the PTI founder clarified that all official communication should be made solely through Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, and reaffirmed his trust in party members Ahmad Chattha and Bilal Ejaz, denying rumours of their removal.

Meanwhile, PTI’s Central Secretary Information Sheikh Waqas Akram condemned Israel’s airstrikes in Gaza, urging the UN and OIC to take collective action to halt what he called “continued aggression.” The party also criticised the Adiala Jail administration for allegedly ignoring court orders that grant Khan visitation rights, calling on the Islamabad High Court to intervene.

Separately, a PTI delegation led by Asad Qaiser met JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad to discuss political cooperation. Qaiser said he proposed holding a national jirga to address security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — an idea the JUI-F leader reportedly supported. Both sides also discussed uniting opposition parties in Parliament and agreed to back Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s nomination for the opposition leader’s post.
