JAKARTA – A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck Papua province in Indonesia on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
The quake occurred at a depth of 70 kilometers (43.5 miles), with its epicenter located about 200 kilometers from the city of Abepura, which has a population of more than 62,000 people, according to USGS data.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued following the tremor.
Indonesia, located along the seismically active “Ring of Fire”, frequently experiences earthquakes due to the meeting of several tectonic plates beneath the region.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but authorities are continuing to monitor the situation for possible aftershocks.
