Jail trial of Imran Khan in GHQ attack case restored

Published on: October 6, 2025 8:40 PM

The Punjab government has reinstated the jail trial of PTI founder Imran Khan in the General Headquarters (GHQ) attack case. A formal notification was issued on Monday, allowing the trial to continue inside Adiala Jail. This development reverses an earlier decision from September 15, which had shifted the trial venue out of the jail. Now, authorities expect the hearing to resume as early as Tuesday within the prison premises.

To ensure maximum security, the Adiala Jail superintendent requested additional support from Rawalpindi police. This step comes amid heightened security concerns around Imran Khan’s ongoing legal battles. The GHQ attack is one of several cases linked to the May 9 violence, which erupted after Khan’s arrest earlier that year. Officials aim to prevent any disturbances by holding sensitive proceedings behind bars.

Previously, Imran Khan had been presented before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Rawalpindi via video link. That arrangement had followed the earlier decision to move his trial outside jail premises. However, Monday’s notification cancels that shift, signaling a return to closed-door proceedings. The government cites safety and operational ease as reasons for resuming the jail trial.

This decision underscores the seriousness of the charges stemming from the May 9 riots. The GHQ attack case is among the most high-profile matters involving PTI supporters. Authorities claim that protesters, allegedly incited by Khan’s arrest, targeted key military installations across the country. The government continues to pursue legal action against those involved, including party leaders.

Looking ahead, the resumption of the jail trial marks a critical step in the legal process against the former prime minister. It also reflects the administration’s cautious approach to handling politically sensitive cases. With security tightened and courtroom proceedings returning to Adiala Jail, the next hearings will likely draw national attention once again.
