Meta Launches Instagram Map in Pakistan to Help Users Explore, Connect, and Share Safely

KARACHI, October 4, 2025: Meta has announced the rollout of Instagram Map in Pakistan, introducing a dynamic and interactive way for users to explore what’s happening nearby — from concerts and cafes to travel destinations — while keeping strict privacy safeguards in place. The feature, now available at the top of users’ Direct Message (DM) inboxes, enables Pakistanis to share their location and browse stories, reels, posts, and notes tagged with specific places. Users can choose to share their last active location with selected friends, close friends, or no one at all, maintaining full control over their privacy settings.

Meta underscored that location sharing is off by default, and a persistent on-screen indicator shows when it’s active. Users also receive reminders when tagging locations, ensuring clarity about what’s being shared and with whom. In a statement, Meta said the map aims to make local discovery and connection easier while “empowering people to explore Pakistan’s vibrant communities safely and on their own terms.”

Privacy and Parental Oversight

Parents supervising teens on Instagram will have comprehensive oversight under the new feature. They can review and manage their child’s sharing settings, aligning with Meta’s broader push toward safer, more transparent digital experiences for younger users. Meta has also implemented refinements based on user feedback — including removing profile photos from map posts, adding clear indicators when location sharing is disabled, and previewing how tagged content appears before publishing.

Broader Instagram Updates

The Instagram Map rollout follows Meta’s August 6 announcement of a suite of sharing-focused features, including:

  • A profile tab dedicated to reposted content.

  • A live location map to discover tagged posts and stories.

  • A new “Friends” tab in Reels, surfacing videos that friends engage with most.

These updates reflect Meta’s effort to enhance community-based interaction and local discovery, a direction increasingly popular among Gen Z users in Pakistan.

Meta’s Vision for Local Connectivity

With Pakistan representing one of Instagram’s fastest-growing markets in South Asia, Meta’s regional expansion of features like the interactive map underscores the platform’s push to localize global experiences. “The Instagram Map helps users see what’s happening around them — from cultural events to trending cafes — while maintaining meaningful control over their privacy,” said a Meta spokesperson.
