OpenAI becomes world’s most valuable startup at $500B

Published on: October 2, 2025 10:34 PM

The valuation of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has skyrocketed to an unprecedented $500 billion following a private share sale. Reports revealed that employees sold $6.6 billion worth of shares to investors, a move that places OpenAI ahead of SpaceX, which holds a valuation of around $400 billion. If confirmed, this marks a historic leap for the artificial intelligence developer, making it the most valuable startup in the world.

Investors from across the globe showed keen interest in the deal, with Japanese tech investment giant SoftBank emerging as a prominent buyer. Other investors included Thrive Capital, Dragoneer, and Abu Dhabi’s AI investment firm MGX. The development reflects growing global appetite for artificial intelligence ventures, as OpenAI continues to push the boundaries of generative AI while attracting record-breaking financial backing from leading players in the technology sector.

OpenAI’s valuation rise comes just months after a deal in March 2025 valued the company at $300 billion, tied to conditions under which SoftBank pledged to invest $40 billion. The dramatic jump underscores how quickly investor confidence in the firm has grown, fueled by strong revenue performance and rapid adoption of its generative AI tools. In the first half of 2025 alone, OpenAI reportedly earned around $4.3 billion in revenue, highlighting its ability to commercialize AI technologies on a massive scale.

Despite this momentum, industry analysts have voiced concerns about the sustainability of such rapid growth, especially as OpenAI and other developers face infrastructure costs running into the hundreds of billions. Much of this spending is directed toward advanced computing systems powered by Nvidia’s GPUs, which remain essential for running AI models. Nvidia, now valued at $4.5 trillion, has pledged investments of up to $100 billion into OpenAI, intensifying discussions about potential risks of over-dependence and inflated market conditions.

Still, investors remain undeterred, continuing to pour capital into the AI sector. OpenAI’s rival, Anthropic, also secured $13 billion at a $183 billion valuation last month, further fueling the competition. While some observers warn of a bubble forming, the latest valuation jump for OpenAI reflects unmatched investor belief that generative AI will remain the defining technology of the decade.
