Stuart Craig, the legendary production designer behind Harry Potter and The English Patient, has passed away at the age of 83. His family confirmed that he died peacefully at home after a 14-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. They described him as a beloved husband and father who touched many lives not just through his work, but also through his kindness.
Craig’s career spanned over four decades and included some of the most visually iconic films in cinema history. He won three Academy Awards for Gandhi, Dangerous Liaisons, and The English Patient, and received eight additional Oscar nominations. His achievements at the BAFTAs were even greater, with 16 nominations and three wins throughout his career.
Born in Norwich in 1942, Craig studied film design at the Royal College of Art before joining the film industry. He worked on early projects like Casino Royale, Scrooge, and Royal Flash, and gained recognition with The Elephant Man—his first Oscar-nominated project. He then teamed up with director Richard Attenborough for the epic Gandhi, which became a landmark moment in his career.
Over the years, Craig became known for creating rich, detailed sets that brought historical and fictional worlds to life. He worked on major films like The Mission, Chaplin, and Notting Hill, but his most famous work remains the Harry Potter series. From Hogwarts’ magical halls to Diagon Alley’s bustling shops, Craig shaped the look and feel of the Wizarding World, both in films and theme parks.
David Heyman, producer of Harry Potter, praised Craig as not only a master of design but also a kind and supportive person who inspired those around him. Craig’s long-time collaborator, set decorator Stephenie McMillan, worked with him on 16 films, contributing to the elegance and realism of his designs. Her death in 2013 was a deeply felt loss for Craig.
Stuart Craig is survived by his wife Patricia, their daughters Becky and Laura, and four grandchildren. His work will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers, artists, and fans around the world.
