China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Wednesday for increased dialogue and cooperation with the United States. Speaking in Beijing to a delegation of US business leaders, including executives from Goldman Sachs, Boeing, and Apple, Wang warned against confrontation between the two global powers. He emphasized the need to avoid misjudgments, manage differences peacefully, and explore new areas of cooperation.
Wang’s remarks came shortly after the latest round of US-China trade talks held in Stockholm, where both sides agreed to consider extending their 90-day tariff truce originally struck in May. He stressed that the relationship between China and the United States has a profound impact on global stability, economic growth, and international dynamics.
The Chinese minister urged both countries to open more channels of communication and consultation. He called on them to view each other objectively, rationally, and pragmatically to foster a correct strategic perception. Wang also strongly rejected unilateralism, protectionism, and bullying tactics, highlighting the importance of mutual respect in bilateral ties.
Wang encouraged US companies to maintain confidence in the growing Chinese market and welcomed them to continue investing in various sectors. The US executive delegation visiting China this week also met with China’s commerce and industry ministers, signaling ongoing efforts to strengthen economic cooperation.
The visit and Wang’s remarks come amid preparations for a possible summit between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. The leaders are expected to meet around the APEC forum in South Korea, scheduled from October 26 to November 1. This high-level engagement underscores the complex but vital relationship between the two countries amid global economic and geopolitical challenges.
