Govt moves to introduce uniform electricity tariff nationwide from july 1

Published on: June 29, 2025 5:20 PM

ISLAMABAD – The federal government has requested NEPRA to approve a uniform electricity tariff for all ex-WAPDA distribution companies (XWDISCOs) and K-Electric, starting July 1, 2025. The move aims to replace current varying rates with a single, nationwide tariff system.

NEPRA announced that it will hold a public hearing on July 1 to review the government’s motion. The proposed tariff structure includes targeted subsidies, cross-DISCO adjustments, and tariff rationalization surcharges to ensure balanced pricing across the country.

To bring K-Electric in line with the rest of Pakistan, the government has asked for changes to KE’s consumer-end tariff. These adjustments would revise the variable charges and introduce cross-subsidies to meet KE’s revenue needs, as determined by NEPRA.

Once approved, the new “Uniform Final Tariff” will replace existing rates currently implemented through previous SROs, including the one issued on July 14, 2024, for XWDISCOs, and SRO No. 575(I)/2019 for KE. The final notification will come from the Ministry of Energy’s Power Division.

NEPRA has invited all stakeholders, industry representatives, and the public to join the hearing in person or online to ensure a transparent process. Participants can also submit comments or concerns in writing to NEPRA’s Registrar.

This shift toward a unified tariff system is expected to simplify billing, reduce regional price gaps, and ensure fair energy pricing for consumers across Pakistan.
