Pakistan’s air defence can stop hypersonic weapons, says PAF official

Published on: May 10, 2025 12:19 AM

In a major revelation, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has confirmed that the country’s air defence system is fully capable of countering even hypersonic weapons. This bold claim was made by Air Vice Marshal Aurangzeb Ahmed during a press briefing held alongside the Director General of ISPR. He highlighted the growing strength of Pakistan’s defence technology and its readiness to respond to modern-day aerial threats.

During the briefing, Air Vice Marshal Ahmed shared key details about a recent incident that occurred on the night between May 6 and 7. He said that when Indian aircraft attempted to breach Pakistan’s airspace, the PAF acted swiftly. Impressively, the force became active within just two minutes of detecting the threat and engaged in a confrontation that lasted for more than an hour.

Importantly, he confirmed that one of the Indian fighter jets was taken down by Pakistan’s air defence system. According to the PAF official, this action reflects the precision and readiness of Pakistan’s defence network. He added that both India and Pakistan have advanced air defence systems, but Pakistan’s ability to respond within minutes gave it the upper hand during this encounter.

Moreover, Air Vice Marshal Ahmed stated that Pakistan’s defence system is not only effective against traditional aircraft but also prepared to counter high-speed, next-generation threats. “Our system is fully capable of dealing with even hypersonic weapons,” he said. Hypersonic weapons, which travel at speeds greater than five times the speed of sound, pose a serious challenge for many nations.

To support his claims, he also played audio recordings of intercepted conversations between Indian Rafale pilots during the incident. This move was meant to demonstrate the confusion and panic within the Indian side once the PAF responded swiftly. These recordings provided a rare insight into the real-time tension and pressure faced by the Indian pilots during the failed attempt.

In conclusion, the PAF’s quick response and advanced capability once again show Pakistan’s growing strength in aerial defence. With increasing regional tensions, such developments are likely to play a critical role in maintaining balance and deterrence in South Asia.
